Newmark built Craigslist in 1995 as a simple email list for friends in San Francisco; it grew into one of the most visited websites in the world (700+ cities, 70 countries) without ever running an ad. He reportedly turned down offers of up to $11 billion to monetize aggressively, kept it close to free, stepped back in 2000, and has since redirected his time and fortune toward philanthropy (Craig Newmark Philanthropies, founded 2015 — focus on cybersecurity, military families/veterans, trustworthy journalism). The community effort: The community rallied around the $Craig token to raise money for two of Newmark's consistent priorities — Blue Star Families (@BlueStarFamily) and the Bob Woodruff Foundation (@bwforg). 100% of trading fees are routed to those two orgs via Pump.fun's donation feature (donate.gg). Within a couple of hours of writing, over $5,000 had been raised. Community members reached out to Craig directly; he responded, thanked them, and liked several posts documenting the fundraising.
